Description

The history of Reykjavík

The capital of Iceland, goes back to the ninth century when the famous settler, Ingólfur Arnarsson, landed there and decided to stay. He named the place where he made his home Reykjavík (Smokey Bay) because of the columns of steam rising from the hot springs in the vicinity. Subsequently further settlers arrived and after the establishment of the Icelandic parliament Alþingi  in 930 AD the country was fully settled. For many centuries Reykjavík was sparsely populated and had the appearance of farmland rather than a town. It was not until the eighteenth century that Reykjavík started to become more densely populated and at the beginning of the twentieth century, Reykjavík had taken on the appearance of an urban capital with schools, shops, restaurants and numerous companies. The rural life was still prevalent, however, since agriculture was practiced on many farms. The six photographs that are used on these wall decals are all taken at this time when urban and rural life overlapped in Reykjavík.
